This story is a toast to the idealism and character of the “greatest generation,” their children, and the classic family road trip. Don Browning, a middle-aged writer, returns home and decides to finally honor his father’s request to return his ashes to his childhood home in Mount Union, Iowa. When Don discovers that Grandma’s home is now a grocery store, he begins travelling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father. Don’s existential journey through America’s heartland is a road trip which shifts smoothly from the present to Don’s memories of the annual, torturous vacations of his childhood. Leaving Iowa is a postcard from the road for anyone who has found himself or herself driving alone along a road, filling the hours with fond memories of his or her youth.
